Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is a hobby where operators use radio waves to connect with others across the globe.

Though hams use their radios for a variety of fun pastimes, one of the most popular is volunteering. These volunteer-focused hams use their personal equipment along with their event management skills and experience to ensure events run smoothly, taking the burden of communication off of the organizers and staff. Here are just a few things hams can do for your event:

• Shadow key event staff
• Ensure communications coverage for many locations
• Contact all stations in an emergency
• Provide advice and expertise for managing communications

What's more, hams act purely as volunteers, asking for nothing more than the pride of helping out - and maybe a cool t-shirt, if there are extras.
